How to Reset Your YouTube Algorithm (Step-by-Step Guide)
Tired of seeing irrelevant videos in your YouTube feed? The YouTube algorithm learns from your viewing habits, and sometimes it gets stuck recommending content you’re no longer interested in. Here’s how to reset it.
Why Your YouTube Recommendations Go Wrong
YouTube’s algorithm tracks everything — what you watch, how long you watch, what you search for, what you like, and even what you skip. Over time, a few accidental clicks or curiosity watches can skew your entire feed.
Common reasons recommendations go sideways:
- You watched a few videos on a topic you’re not actually interested in
- Someone else used your account or device
- You fell down a rabbit hole and YouTube thinks you want more of that content
- Your interests changed but your watch history didn’t
Step 1: Clear Your Watch History
This is the most effective reset. Your watch history is the primary signal YouTube uses for recommendations.
- Go to myactivity.google.com
- Click YouTube History on the left
- Click Delete and choose All time
- Confirm the deletion
Alternatively, in the YouTube app:
- Tap your profile picture
- Go to Settings > Privacy
- Tap Clear watch history
This removes the data YouTube uses to recommend videos. Your feed will temporarily show more generic, trending content until the algorithm learns your new preferences.
Step 2: Clear Your Search History
Search history is the second major signal.
- Go to myactivity.google.com
- Click YouTube History
- Filter by Search history
- Click Delete and choose All time
Or in the YouTube app: Settings > Privacy > Clear search history.
Step 3: Remove Unwanted Subscriptions
Subscriptions influence what appears in your feed. Unsubscribe from channels you no longer watch:
- Go to your Subscriptions page
- Click Manage in the top right
- Unsubscribe from channels that no longer interest you
Focus on channels you haven’t watched in months — they’re diluting your feed with irrelevant content.
Step 4: Retrain the Algorithm
After clearing your history, actively teach YouTube what you want to see:
- Search for topics you’re interested in and watch videos fully
- Like videos you enjoy — this is a strong positive signal
- Use “Not Interested” on videos you don’t want — tap the three dots on any video and select “Not interested” or “Don’t recommend channel”
- Subscribe to channels you want to see regularly
It takes about 1–2 weeks of active use for the algorithm to fully adjust to your new preferences.
Step 5: Pause Watch History (Optional)
If you want to prevent YouTube from tracking your viewing habits entirely:
- Go to Settings > Privacy
- Toggle Pause watch history
With this enabled, YouTube won’t use your viewing activity for recommendations. The downside is that your recommendations will be less personalized — mostly trending and popular content.
Does This Affect Your Channel?
If you’re a YouTube creator, clearing your personal watch history doesn’t affect your channel’s performance, analytics, or how your videos are recommended to others. This only resets your personal feed.
