How to Turn Off Age Restriction on YouTube (2026 Guide)
Getting the “This video may be inappropriate for some users” message on YouTube? Here’s how to access age-restricted content on every device.
Why YouTube Age-Restricts Videos
YouTube restricts videos that contain:
- Graphic violence or disturbing imagery
- Mature themes (drug use, adult situations)
- Vulgar language
- Content not suitable for minors
Creators can set age restrictions on their own videos, or YouTube may automatically restrict them based on content review. Age-restricted videos don’t appear in YouTube Kids, won’t show in recommendations for logged-out users, and can’t be embedded on most websites.
Method 1: Verify Your Age (Permanent Fix)
The proper way to access age-restricted content is to verify that your Google account belongs to someone 18 or older.
Option A: Set Your Birthdate
- Go to myaccount.google.com
- Click Personal info
- Under Basic info, click Birthday
- Set a birthdate that shows you’re 18+
- Save changes
If your Google account already has a birthdate under 18, you’ll need to wait until the account age is 18+ or verify with an ID.
Option B: Verify with ID or Credit Card
If Google requires verification:
- When prompted on an age-restricted video, click Verify
- Choose your verification method:
- Credit/debit card — Google checks the card is associated with someone 18+
- Government ID — upload a photo of your ID (Google deletes it after verification)
- Verification is usually instant for credit cards, or within a few hours for ID
This is a one-time process. Once verified, all age-restricted videos will be accessible on that account.
Method 2: Sign In to Your Account
Age-restricted videos are completely hidden from logged-out users. If you’re not signed in:
- Click Sign in in the top right
- Sign in with your Google account
- The video should now be accessible (if your account is verified as 18+)
Method 3: On Mobile (iPhone & Android)
- Open the YouTube app
- Make sure you’re signed in (tap your profile picture to check)
- If your account is age-verified, age-restricted videos will play normally
- If prompted to verify, follow the on-screen steps (same ID/card process)
If Using a Supervised Account
If your YouTube account is managed by a parent through Google Family Link:
- Age-restricted content may be blocked by parental controls
- The parent/guardian needs to adjust settings in Family Link
- Go to Family Link app > Your child’s account > YouTube settings > Content restrictions
Method 4: On Smart TV
- Make sure you’re signed into YouTube with an age-verified Google account
- Most smart TVs don’t offer in-app age verification — verify on desktop or mobile first
- Once your account is verified, sign in on the TV and age-restricted content will play
Why Age Verification Isn’t Working
Common issues:
- Account age is under 18 — you set a birthdate showing you’re a minor. You’ll need to wait or verify with ID
- Country restrictions — some countries (particularly in the EU) require stricter age verification due to regulations like the Digital Services Act
- Supervised account — if someone manages your account through Family Link, they control your content access
- Browser/app is outdated — update to the latest version
- Incognito/private mode — age-restricted content won’t show if you’re not signed in
For Creators: Managing Age Restrictions
If you’re a creator whose video got age-restricted:
- Go to YouTube Studio
- Click Content in the left sidebar
- Look for the age restriction label on your video
- If you believe the restriction is wrong, click the video, go to Visibility, and submit an appeal
Age-restricted videos get significantly less reach because they:
- Don’t appear in recommendations for logged-out users
- Can’t be watched in YouTube Kids
- Show limited or no ads (reducing revenue)
- Can’t be embedded on most external websites
